Fellow Deacon of Zion

One of the responsibilities of the Board of Deacons as described in paragraph A7.02.g of Zion’s by-laws says that “at least one deacon should be present at each worship service”.

At our March 2008 meeting, we Deacons and Pastor Vance decided to try a ‘Deacon of the Day’ ministry.  The following is a summary of that ministry.

Schedule - Each Deacon will assume (be assigned?) the responsibility to see that they or a designate will be present as Deacon of the Day (DOD) at about 9 Sunday’s of services (all three Sunday services and the following weeks special services) during the year.  (Something like the Lay- Assistants do)  If a Deacon cannot serve at a particular service and/or on a particular Sunday, they can ask another Deacon or designate (someone) to exchange with or substitute for them.

Each quarter the initial DOD assignment schedule will be posted in the Narthex. In addition, an informational copy will be on the church’s web site. Also, a copy will be sent to Deacons via email.  However, any subsequent changes made to the schedule may or may not appear on the web site.  The Master Schedule posted in the Narthex should be considered to be THE SCHEDULE and updated by the persons involved in the changes.

Basic areas of service:

Greeter/Host – If it is possible, greet worshipers coming and going, between, before and after services.  Look for visitors and strangers and help them feel welcome.

Emergencies - Be prepared to assist in emergencies such as: falls, sickness, fainting, etc.  Know where the fire extinguishers are.  Answer the church telephone between & during services.

Serve optionally– as either an Usher or as a Communion Assistant (for continuous communion only) Note that it is not possible to serve as both at the same service.

Ushers & Communion Assistants - Be familiar with responsibilities of Ushers and Communion Assistants.  Assist them and assume their responsibilities in case they overlook anything.

Substitute Volunteers  - Recruit substitutes for scheduled Ushers or Communion Assistants in case they do not show up. Assist recruits and explain their duties as required.

Sound System- Be familiar with nominal operation of the Sound System: how to turn it on and off, how to check batteries and know where fresh batteries are, how to check the assistive listening devices, etc...

Hot Coffee – monitor supply and replenish as necessary.  Empty and rinse out pots during the 10:15 service unless there is to be some special gathering after this service.
